We booked our move with Stateway on Jan. 9th, 2013. The price quote was $675. to transport our vehicle from Mass. to NC. I was told there was a pick up window of 1 to 7 business days but was also told that most were picked up within 4 days. I was required to supply a credit card for a $175.00 deposit. The balance of $500.00 was to be paid to the driver upon delivery.
On or around Jan.18th,(about 10 days later) having had no contact, I began calling and leaving messages. They did return my call. I was told that they were working very hard to arrange my pick up and they would “expedite” my order. I explained we had purchased this vehicle and the seller had been patient, but we really needed the vehicle picked up.
Several days went by and on approximately Jan. 22nd, (about day 14), I was told that they were going to raise the amount posted on the dispatch board to get a driver to respond and that this money was going to come out of their deposit. This is when I realized how this system works. It was becoming clear that the $175.00 deposit was really a broker fee, and the actual carrier was only going to receive $500.00 for transporting our vehicle. Stateway was going to raise the offer to $550.00 and the extra $50.00 due upon delivery would be refunded to me from their deposit.
Becoming anxious to get this vehicle picked up, this increasing continued; first, an additional $50.00 and then another $50.00 and another until the amount was up to $750.00 on the dispatch board. I felt this was the only way we’d ever get a carrier to commit and so I did agree to pay additional upon delivery and Stateway continued to promise the deposit would be refunded. On Jan.25th (day 17), thank God, the order was finally dispatched to a carrier. Unfortunately, the driver had a couple of delays and the actual delivery was not until Feb.3rd, (day 26 ).

So, was the initial low price just to book the job and secure their deposit as many in this industry appear to do? I don’t think so with Stateway. Sara, Rachel and Andy were all very courteous and pleasant, convincing me of their sincerity. The fact that they kept increasing the posted amount from their deposit seemed like the honest and responsible thing to do. Stateway did refund our deposit. I believe Stateway is a reputable auto transporter/broker that could avoid some negative speculation simply by answering every incoming call... and by making all quotes more realistic.

We definitely would use Stateway in the future.
