I've shipped several cars overseas, but this is the first time that I've shipped a car within the US - and the first time in 20 years. I was looking for a specific car and found it at a dealership in Albuquerque, while I'm on the East Coast. Normally no issue, you hop on a plane and drive your new car back - that's a cool road trip - but COVID. The week before I was going to fly out, New Mexico effectively shut down, so the easiest way was to ship the car. So where to start? All of the shippers say they are the best and most say bad things about the competition. They are all brokers and it is impossible to schedule directly with the actual trucking company. I went out and spent a couple of days reading reviews. I picked three and requested quotes. Some of the companies were quite pushy and called every day and the quotes were all similar - although the quotes are really a guess - the brokers list your car and route and wait for bids from the actual trucking companies - the bids are going to be higher than the estimates in many cases. Not being overwhelmed by the companies, I decided to call a couple of more of which AmeriFreight was one. The other was like the first three but AmeriFreight stood out. Samantha explained the whole bidding process, how timing and insurance worked and so forth. The thing that clinched the deal was that AmeriFreight wanted no money up front to "list" the car - the others all wanted $100 for that which effectively ties you to them even if the price goes up (although you get a refund if the don't find an acceptable shipper of course). I got the quote on Thursday and accepted it on Friday. I wasn't in a hurry, so that is the way that they listed the car and I figured it would be a couple of days before I heard anything. Imagine my surprise when I got a call on Saturday telling me that there was a shipper that could pick my car up on Monday. I called the dealership to assure that Monday would work for them and called Samantha back and agreed. At this point, of course, they wanted a down payment and the cost of whatever insure I picked. The rest would be paid to the driver in cash on delivery. My car was supposed to be at my house the following Friday. The dealer called me Monday around noon their time to tell me that the car was being loaded. My second surprise came on Wednesday when my phone rand and a voice told me that he was the driver and was outside my house. He had the car partially unloaded by the time I got outside. The car was a bit dusty but in pristine condition. He took it off the truck and put it in my driveway. Luckily I had gone to the bank that morning and I don't know what would have happened if I didn't have cash. A half hour after he called me, he was back on the road heading to NJ to drop off the next car. I'm still trying to figure out how they drove 1600 miles in two days - even with two drivers. Here are the upsides of AmeriFreight: Friendly, helpful and willing to explain most anything. I dealt with both Samantha, Milly and Brandon and all three knew what they were doing and gave me the same information. Getting a real quote with a schedule went far faster than I expected The trucking companies they use seem very professional and have clean, well maintained trucks - at least mine was. The trucking companies had no issues with dropping the car at my driveway. Other companies said that they couldn't get there and I'd have to meet them at the main road. There were, of course, a couple of downsides - more to do with the trucking companies than with AmeriFreight. The driver calling when he was at the door could have been a problem. He was two days early (not that I'm complaining about that) an a call several hours before his arrival would have been very helpful, allowed me to go to the bank and made sure that I was actually home. The driver didn't have an actual bill of lading or a receipt for the money. He said that he would email them. A quick call to AmeriFreight got me the receipt and bill of lading while we were on the phone. Would I use AmeriFreight again? In a heartbeat as they not only appeared very professional, but they also seem to work with reliable carriers. Pricing was about the same (perhaps a hair cheaper) than the others.
