OMG It's finally over

Feeling very vulnerable about my ignorance of the car transport business I went online to research options. I sent out a request for bids on transporting my husband's truck to Florida, where my brother-in-law would receive the truck. At first I was deluged with emails from every Tom, Bjorn and Jose who are in the business of auto transport, some even called me before I had the chance to review my options. Too much information! Next comes the wading through several web-based sites for company reviews, and advice from how-to-sites regarding the process. What fun! Add in a brother-in-law who drives me crazy with all sorts of special requests (shipping items in the truck, and having a cell phone that only intermittently works).

I finally chose AmeriFreight based on the combination of web reviews and a conversation with Graham at AmeriFreight who was able to answer my questions without hesitation and patience. I also appreciated that they would not take a deposit until they had settled on a carrier. I had to call back several times with additional information to assure that Graham had all of the specifics regarding the size of the truck as it is an extended cab with a hand built rack. Oh and by the way we are going to ship art supplies, too. Prices rose with all the additions but at $1800 still a whole lot less expensive than driving across the country.

Pick up was a surreal experience as our carrier Camillo was from Cuba with a thick accent and when he called to arrange pick up we had some amusing conversations as we both tried to understand the other. But Camillo was undaunted and we persevered. We met at the arranged location, me with my camera to document the condition of the truck and the entire loading process. Camillo was great and got into the whole thing by posing with us and hamming it up for the camera.

Days pass, no truck here, not there yet, much anxiety - when will it finally come. 6 days later I get woken at 7 am by a phone call- its Camillo and he can't make contact with the brother-in-law. Of course the cell phone isn't working again. I take a deep breathe and try another call and he answers! Call the carrier and get the truck!

Whew, its over now - the truck is in Florida, the brother-in-law is happy- no problems with damage or anything. Considering all of the variables of things that could have gone wrong, in the end Ameri-Freight's Graham did a good job at communicating with me and setting us up with our carrier. After reading all of the contract I understood who was liable for damages and other problems that could arise - so I knew what I had to do. But there is no predicting my wild card brother-in-law but I suppose that is what makes life exciting - not always knowing and letting it go.
