Great Value in the end, but some frustration along the way

We were moving from Chicago to Los Angeles and were recommended AmeriFreight based on word-of-mouth and Internet searches. We agreed to $745 total after discounts for writing this review. Given that the Chicago to LA route was highly desirable, Jorge was confident that our low-ball offer would be accepted by someone. So we trusted his instinct and budgeted accordingly.

Below are the difficulties we faced throughout the process:
1) The first offer that Jorge came to us with was $100 over the asking price, and he proposed that we (AmeriFreight and us) split the difference, so $50 extra each. While we understood that they are negotiating with the shippers, we were taken aback that he would even consider bringing this to us given the popularity of the route and the odds of getting a better deal. The ultimate amount we went with was $80 over our planned price, split for $40 each. We needed to adjust our budget and added an unneeded headache.
2) The driver would only accept cash or cashier's check. This was NOT communicated to us from the beginning and seemed very shady. We weren't comfortable doing this, but had no choice at this point in the processes.
3) We were driving our other car to LA and would not be arriving until 5 days later. The driver told us he would have the car in LA in 3 days, which meant we needed to arrange for someone else to receive it in LA (a pain in the behind to arrange). We ended up paying someone from our apartment complex to do it. But the driver did not communicate clearly as to exactly when he would arrive. So we ended up having the person ready on a Sunday and the driver didn't show when he finally told us he would. So we had to apologize to the person we were paying and arrange for another day. It was embarrassing and frustrating.

Overally most of our frustrations stemmed from our experience with the independent shipping company/driver. But AmeriFreight is responsible for finding these companies and should do a better job at screening this type of behavior. I would use them again in the future, but would request they be more transparent with the process and ensure they do their due diligence in screening shippers and accepting offers.
