I'm a grad student and my lab moved from the University of Pennsylvania to UCSF. I needed to ship my car from Philadelphia to San Francisco while I drove my wife's car across the country. I spoke with a few brokers, and decided to go with Bob Turner at AmeriFreight. Bob understood that as a grad student, money is in short supply. Right off the bat he offered me a student discount - all I needed to do was email him a scanned copy of my Student ID. Bob offers a range of prices depending upon how quickly you need your car at your destination. I chose the lowest price option with the understanding that it may take a few weeks to find a truck willing to accept the low price. I knew I didn't need my car immediately when I got there, and I was interested in saving every dime I could. My original quote was for $895. The great thing is that Bob will contact you whenever he receives interest from a shipper. So within about a week, Bob had contacted me letting me know that there was a truck that could take my car across the country for $1150. Of course it was up to me whether I wanted to take the higher price or wait a while longer. I passed. In the next few weeks Bob would drop me a few emails whenever he got additional offers. There was never any pressure to take an offer above the original quote, they were just presented in case I decided I wanted my car out sooner.
After a few weeks I decided life would be better with my car out here, so when Bob found a trucker willing to ship the car for around $900 and offered to refund $75 of his $175 fee, I jumped at it. In the end I only paid $100 more than the lowest price quoted and got my car a little sooner.
I really appreciate Bob's involvement during the entire process, and for kicking in some of his own money to help keep my total costs down.
