I recently accepted a position with a company that required me to move from Texas to California. Unfortunately, my company would only move two of my three cars. So I was on my own to find a company to move the third vehicle. And since my pockets were not as deep as my company's, I had to find a more affordable carrier than they were using.

If you're getting ready to a car, brace yourself for the onslaught. There are many companies and websites in this business. There are websites that aggregate automated bids from multiple carriers. Be careful of these. I thought I had hit the jackpot when I got a quote back for $690. But then when the winning bidder called me, they had a much higher price and blamed the automated low quote on "computer error".

There are other companies that have flashy, very professional-looking websites. But many of them have horrible reviews. Be sure to search for the company names on Yelp and BBB. If the company doesn't even appear on either of these - beware! They are either new & inexperienced, or perhaps they are just doing business under a new name to get out from under a series of bad reviews.

Other companies requested quotes from would continue to call and/or email me trying to get my business even after I told them I was not interested in pursuing them.

I stumbled upon Ship-A-Car Direct via TransportReviews.com. But reviews were very good on Yelp and they also had a high BBB rating. My initial contact was with Emily and she was very professional and never tried to do the hard sell. Once I had booked the service, she would follow up with helpful reminder e-mails about the transport process and what to expect next. I was put in touch with a locally-based carrier in Austin who was very professional and carried out the pick-up exactly as scheduled. My car arrived on-time five days later in California and delivered without a scratch. I was even out of town on the day when the car was due to arrive but I was able to make arrangements to have it delivered to a friend's house. No problems!

This was a great deal with a great company. I got my car in half the time and at 2/3 the price my company paid to move each of my other cars.
