How much of a premium for peace of mind?

When I initially looked for estimates for shipping my car, Emily was the first to respond. Her estimate subsequently served as the baseline for comparing the multitude of other bids I received. As these other bids rolled in, I could see that Ship a Car Direct was by no means the cheapest bidder. (Bids ranged from $650 to $850, plus one $1500 quote for a closed transport). I also received several "bids" that included no prices, but only the "we have a truck in your area and can give you a good deal" messages that Emily (and others) warned about. Fortunately, I had about 2 weeks before I needed to ship the car, and was able to research the bidders and read reviews documenting the horrors others have experienced with their shipments. The things that sold me on Ship a Car Direct: 1) they are accredited with the Better Business Bureau; 2) they have an "A" rating with the BBB; 3) the relative lack of negative reviews online posted by their customers; 4) they provided information to help educate the customer, as well as warn the customer of tactics used by other less savory players in the industry; 5) (and this is a big one) they maintain and use their black list of transporters with whom they have had issues in the past so neither they nor their customers have to deal with those troublemakers again; 6) they guarantee that if any damage occurs, they make sure the customer will not have to pay for repairs. I could have possibly saved a few $$ by going elsewhere, but I could have also been eaten alive by hidden fees and other costs. Bottom line: Ship a Car Direct gave me a "no worries" transportation service for a decent and reasonable price.
