Started day prior when dispatcher was calling me to see if driver had contacted me for pick up, he had not. Following day was contacted by driver without warning and expected to deliver car to him. I was unable to and suggested he return later time. He committed to that and after several failed times arrived around midnight to retrieve car. Drive was late and requested cash advance for fuel cost. Driver did not call ahead, was late to pick up. I meet with the drive and two other drives on crew. I was reluctant to ship car with hauler but car needed to get to California for returning IRAQ veteran to have upon return to states. After meeting with Crew and saw other cars on trailer I made decision to allow them to transport car. They claimed to specialize in Classic Cars. After about week, drive claims to broke down in Arizona and wanted to know if they could drive the car to California (roughly 500-600 miles) I did not agree. When car finally arrived my son had noted that 500+ miles had been put on the vehicle during the trip to California. Most frustrating event ever. My brother and I had worked on this car and put more the $10,000 for my son to have high performance car when he returned. The car broke down within the first usage due to abuse by transporter.
Lessons learned, track mileage and obtain driver license and DOT number. Install GPS on car and track. when milage is added contact local police and have driver arrested for stolen vehicle.
