The Only Required Document Is The Bill Of Lading Agreement

When hiring an auto transport company to ship your car from point A to point B, getting the paperwork right is important. The auto transport booking process should be simple but detailed.

The best answer to this question is the main document which requires a signature and is issued by the auto transport driver direct which is the Bill of Lading. This is also known as the vehicle inspection sheet. This invoice will record any nicks, damages or dents the car may have prior to loading. The same record will be taken on delivery. Copies from both pickup and delivery must be issued to the customer upon signing on location. This allows the customer to pursue any reimbursements for damages if any is found to have occurred while in transit. All vehicles under the care of a car shipper must be fully insured which is required by law.
This is the only required document needed to have your car picked up and delivered by a licensed car shipping company.
The customer should be able to keep their registration paper work, title and license plate. While under the car carriers care, these items are Not necessary.
And of course, the driver will need the keys to load and unload the vehicle. If an emergency arises while shipping, the driver would need the keys just in case a carrier reassignment must take place while in transit.

More Tips: The following are some quick tips to know when reserving a car shipper.

* Making Contact.
Once you find the right car shipper to move your car, you will most likely be calling them or filling out some type of quote request form online. If you are content with what you were issued then the next step would be to place your order. Some companies will allow you to place your order online while others prefer that you call them to go over details on the phone. In any case, make sure to go over any contracts to be signed when reserving your spot.
Pay attention to the fine print and make sure that you are not forfeiting a deposit or reservation fee of any type in case of early cancellation or company inability the pickup and deliver your car. You'll find that non-reputable companies are known to lowball customers with extremely low quotes to gain their business among the competition, locking them in with a small deposit or portion of total and making the customer sign a contract allowing the company to keep that charged deposit no matter what the outcome.
A good way to avoid these companies is performing a quick Google/Bing search of the company name. Search engines will show you more than enough information so you can determine who is honest and who is not.
In truth, a physical/electronic contract is not necessary between the customer and the broker assigning you a car carrier.
The booking process is simple and should be 100% transparent when shipping your car to another state.

* Needed Information When Booking.
Customers must have pickup and delivery with contacts and phone numbers at each zone. Vehicle year make and model should be accurate as auto transport carriers have limited space. If a driver shows up to pick up a vehicle of a certain size and finds that the vehicle is bigger than what they expected to load, this would cause an issue due to lack of space on the transport carrier. It is important to be very clear as to what exactly you are moving so the auto transport carrier will be fully prepared.
Dates for pickup are based on availability. All available routes and times for schedules should be communicated between your auto transport coordinator on your initial contact. Make sure to get everything in writing to have a record of what was discussed including a contact number for the driver handling your order.

* Most Common Way to Pay
Most companies in the auto transport industry will process their charges for service the same way. Expect to split the payment in 2 parts. The first part should be a reservation fee/deposit which is the initial payment to secure your spot on a car hauler. The remaining balance is usually paid on delivery is certified funds (cash, money order or bank certified check). Some companies will offer alternative ways to process the charge for service but in most cases, the mentioned process is the way its done.

Just a few!

As interesting as shipping a car can be, it still requires attention to the paperwork.

Here are a few papers needed and why?

  • Dock Receipt

    This document is provided to recognize that the load is under carrier's responsibility during the transportation process.

  • Bill of Lading (BOL)

    This dpcument serves as the contract between the customer and the carrier.is to record the cargo, its destination, delivery time, and the name(s) of the shipper(s) and carrier(s). The second purpose is for noting the condition of the car for reference, just in case something happens during the transit, so the carrier can reimburse our client. It serves as proof of damages.

  • Original Title and Registration

    The title or the pink slip serves as a proof of the vehicle's resistration, ownership and roadworthiness. This is important for the carriers to make sure the transported vehicle is legally owned by the customer.

  • Gate Pass

    If the vehcile is coming from a port or an auction the carrier does need the gate pass to be able to pick the vehicle up from the location. If the gate pass is not available the customer should pass the buyer number, lot number, member number and Vin number of the vehicle.

Required Documentation

The first and most important document required is the Contract you sign between you and your broker. Generally there is no other paperwork required for a standard US state to state transport. If you are shipping internationally, there will be customs paperwork and/or port paperwork that will need to be filed.

Within the Continental United States If you are having an auto shipping company transport your car, truck, motorcycle, ATV or RV within the continental United States, you will need to provide several pieces of information; including documents such as Original Title and Registration, proof of Insurance and Photo Identification.

Car, Keys and Bill of Lading is all it takes!

When transporting a vehicle our carrier will need the car, keys and a filling in Bill of Lading (BOL) which are either a paper form or an electronic app filled in.  The client is not required to show evidence of ownership or registration.  It is highly recommended that if this a vehicle purchase you ask the seller to mail you any important documents certified mail.  A car that is shipping with our carrier is insured from the time of pick up to delivery inspection and signature from the receiver. (Standard Insurance is included with our company check with any transport company to confirm it is offered at no additional fee).  It is important to keep insurance on a vehicle during transport so that when a car has been delivered you are able to immediately use and drive off with the car.  Once you have inspected the vehicle delivered transport insurance ends.
