International Shipping Requirements

International Vehicle Shipping

International Vehicle Shipping can vary by location, there are a lot of key factors to take into consideration when shipping your Vehicle abroad:

Documenation Requirements:

  • Bill of Sale / Title / Letter of Auth / Military Orders (Generally notorized from your finance company, and can be used in Title's absense)
  • Power of Attorney - Authorizing Shipping line to export your vehicle on a vessel on their behalf
  • Letter of Intent - Who to contact, and whom to send Original Documenation to once the shipping has been complete, to enable you to collect your Vehicle, and show Proof of Ownership.
  • Photo ID - You (or some other designated person) will need Identification to pick up the car. **If you have a US passport, you will aslo need an EIN number**

Preparing Your Vehicle:

  • The gas tank is less than a 1/4 tank full
  • No Personal Belongings - Personal belongings are removed
  • Your vehicle/s is in operating condition, with a working emergency brake, and is licensed or qualified to be licensed for operation on public streets or highways - The vehicle is washed
  • There are no cracks in windshields or other windows
  • You remove fire extinguishers
  • Propane tanks are empty

Things to Keep in Mind When Shipping:

  • Age of Vehicle - Some countries have restrictions on the age of the Vehicle being imported into their Country - Contact Customs Clearing Agent in receiving Country to confirm your Vehicle meets age requirements before shipping.
  • Import Taxes - 99% of Vehicles being Exported outside of the United States will incurre charges when Vehicles reach Destination, and you should Contact a Customs Clearing Agent in receiving Country to get an estimate on import taxes. Generally this is calculated based on a percentage of the Vehicles overall Value.

Shipping Method:

  • Ro/Ro: Roll-on/roll-off (RORO or ro-ro) ships are vessels designed to carry wheeled cargo, such as cars, trucks, semi-trailer trucks, trailers, and railroad cars, that are driven on and off the ship on their own wheels or using a platform vehicle, such as a self-propelled modular transporter.
  • Container: A shipping container, sometimes called an intermodal container, is a large, rectangular steel box that is used in the cargo transport industry. The term “intermodal” refers to the fact that the shipping containers can be moved from one type of transport to another: they can be moved by ship, rail, truck, or plane.

Please Note: Transit times may vary based on loction and Customs Requirements.

Requirements to ship your car overseas

Shipping a vehicle internationally involves additional considerations and requirements compared to domestic auto transport. Here are some general requirements and steps to ship a car internationally:

  1. Research Import Regulations: Start by researching the import regulations of the destination country. Each country has its own specific requirements and restrictions regarding the importation of vehicles. Some countries have age restrictions, emission standards, and other criteria that must be met.

  2. Choose a Shipping Method: Decide on the shipping method that suits your needs. The two primary methods for international car shipping are container shipping and roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) shipping.

    • Container Shipping: Your vehicle is loaded and secured inside a shipping container. This method offers more protection and allows you to transport personal belongings along with the vehicle.

    • RoRo Shipping: Your vehicle is driven onto a specialized vessel and secured on the deck. It is exposed to the elements during transport, and personal belongings are generally not allowed inside the vehicle.

  3. Hire an International Shipping Company: Find a reputable international auto shipping company that specializes in transporting vehicles to the desired destination. Make sure they have experience in handling international shipments and are knowledgeable about the destination country's regulations.

  4. Prepare Required Documents: Obtain the necessary documentation for international vehicle shipment, which may include:

    • Vehicle Title: The original vehicle title or a certified copy.

    • Bill of Sale: Proof of ownership and purchase of the vehicle.

    • Export Certificate: Some countries require an export certificate or a specific form to validate the export of the vehicle from the origin country.

    • Customs Documentation: Various customs forms and documentation may be required by both the origin and destination countries. These can include a bill of lading, customs declaration forms, and any specific country-specific forms.

    • Insurance Documents: Proof of insurance coverage during the international transport.

  5. Arrange Customs Clearance: Work with the shipping company to ensure all necessary customs clearance procedures are followed. This includes providing accurate and complete customs documentation, paying any applicable duties or taxes, and adhering to any import regulations of the destination country.

  6. Prepare the Vehicle for Shipment: Follow the instructions provided by the shipping company to prepare your vehicle for international transport. This may include cleaning the vehicle, removing personal belongings, disabling alarms, and ensuring the fuel level is appropriate for shipment.

  7. Delivery to Port: Arrange for the delivery of your vehicle to the designated departure port. The shipping company can provide guidance on the specific requirements and procedures for delivering the vehicle to the port of departure.

  8. Tracking and Delivery: Stay in touch with the shipping company to track the progress of your vehicle and obtain updates on the estimated arrival date. Once the vehicle reaches the destination port, you will need to arrange for its collection or further transportation to your desired location.

It's important to note that the requirements and processes for international car shipping can vary significantly depending on the destination country. It's advisable to consult with an experienced international auto shipping company or a customs broker who can guide you through the specific requirements and procedures for your particular destination.

International Shipping Requirements

After you have done your shopping and have found a quote that you are happy with, it is important and vital to your shipments success that you have done the following:

1) Document Prep:

You will need to provide key information, including:

  • Personal identification. Two copies of government-issued identification (driver’s license, passport, etc.)
  • Vehicle title. One copy is needed for booking, and the original must go along with the vehicle.
  • Proof of ownership/bill of sale or a certified letter of authorization from the lien holder. Recently purchased vehicles will require a bill of sale. If the vehicle is currently financed, we need a copy of the title and a copy of the lien authorization, both notarized by the lien holder. The finance company must physically mail this to you so that the notarization stamp is original; this document cannot be emailed or faxed. These documents must be available when the vehicle is picked up so that it can go with the vehicle.

2) Complete Required Paperwork:

Consignee Form. This form will be provided by the shipper for you to fill out. Shipping information required includes name, address, and phone number for both the individual shipping the vehicle from the country of origin, as well as the consignee (person the vehicle is going to) at the country of destination. Vehicle information includes year, make, model, and estimated value.

Container List. If your vehicle is traveling in a container with other items, make a general list of everything included. We are not responsible for any of the items in the vehicle, but it is always best to provide your company with a list, which we will include in your booking information.

Return All Documents in a Timely Manner. A common delay in transport is when we don’t receive your required documents in a timely manner to complete your booking.

3) Get Vehicle to the Port of Origin:

You can drop you vehicle at the port, or your broker can arrange for transportation of your vehicle to the port. This will be discussed in the initial call and your quote will reflect this.

Final Payment. The final invoice will be generated once your vehicle is picked up, or it arrives at the port of origin (if you are dropping it off). This final invoice must be paid before your vehicle has arrived at port of destination you will incur storage fees.

Dock Receipt. If you are dropping your vehicle off at the port you will need a dock receipt before arrival. This will be issued through your representative once your booking is completed. If we are transporting your vehicle to the port we will handle this.

4) Receive Vehicle at Destination:

ou will be sent tracking information for the vessel transporting your vehicle, and you will receive notice prior to your vehicles arrival at the port. At that point you will be put in touch with a destination agent who your consignee will work with to receive your vehicle. Your consignee’s identification must match the consignee information that you provided. Your consignee will also need the Bill of Lading (BOL) to pick up the vehicle.

While there are a variety of steps involved and paperwork is required, the international shipping agents usually have extensive experience in making sure your car shipping goes smoothly. Expedited services may also be available for faster shipping.

International Requirement to ship your car

Normally you will need to have the title of your car in your name, and the Bill of sale if the car was just purchased. If you don't have the title you need to obtain permission from the lienholder that states that they allow you to take it out of the country.
