I shipped my car to Hilo, Hawaii, from Los Angeles. There was no pickup; I drove it to the docks in Long Beach, myself. The delivery process seemed pretty easy. I had to pay Red Carpet one fee and the actual shipping company the rest. It turns out to be virtually the same amount whichever way you do it. The car had to be there on a Wednesday before the next sailing (on Saturday). Because I had used Red Carpet, there was a reservation in place for me. Really, using a broker doesn't do very much for you if you are shipping the car to Hawaii EXCEPT get you a reservation on a given ship. Apparently, if you do it yourself - which will cost about the same - you can get bumped from the ship if they are full. Matson, which is the actual carrier, does not provide full insurance coverage and any company which tells you that you are 100% insured via Matson, is not telling the truth. Quite a few companies did tell me that but Matson is no longer (if they ever did) covering 100% of your auto value. Matson covers only the first $8000. and your own car insurance typically covers the rest (but you'd better check with them to make sure).
I found Tige, the agent at Red Carpet, to be honest and friendly. He called personally to tell me when my car had arrived. I would recommend this service to others.
