About one month before our move from MD to NC I began contacting auto transport companies. We have a reproduction of a 1929 Model A. It is an 8 hour drive from MD to NC. The car has plastic snap-on windows, so the weather had to be perfect. It is not a car designed for 8 hours of comfortable driving.
After my initial contact with the transporters, I had to indicate to each company that the car needed to be moved in an enclosed trailer. Fortunately, I reached Eric Rezner from Mercury Auto Transporters. He explained to me how the industry works. An important point that I learned was that we had to have someone at the pickup and the delivery who could drive the car.
The major problem was that we didn’t have flexibility for the pickup. I was able to leave the car in the garage of a relative in No. Virginia. The person worked from home on Tuesdays. Once I explained that I would need a pickup on Tuesday, most companies just stopped working with me. They told me they needed a great deal of flexibility for the pickup. Then Eric assured me that he had a driver that would pick up the car on Tuesday, September 30th.
The driver contacted our relative with a pickup time that was during the DC morning rush hour. We allowed for the possibility of a 3 or 4 hour delay based upon the GPS estimate. The driver was moving with the morning rush hour traffic which can be stop, then move two car lengths. So we felt his arrival was timely when he arrived in a little over 2 hours after the forecast time. He delivered the car within 30 minutes of his indicated arrival time.
Eric’s price was within $50 to $100 of the other transporters that quoted a price but then they said they would not be able to find a driver.
