I thought I was pretty smart asking for several quotes from a couple of different companies. Never mind the fact that I am still getting residual calls from other carriers asking if my car has been delivered yet. I had two companies that were willing to ship my car from Northern California to Charlotte, North Carolina. They bid each other down to $775 so I went with Magic Carpet (which apparently is part of Expert Express?) because Stephanie was confident we could get the car picked up in 1-3 days. I paid my $200 down and called the other guys to let them know I went with someone else. They were bitter and told me that she had bid the shipment out on the driver board at $600 (looks like she makes $175 in commissions). Seven days pass... she calls me and says she is happy to let me know that my car can be shipped for $775 but the driver wants an addition $40. and that was the best she could do. I asked to speak to her manager who was more than happy to tell me that the individual makes the deal and she can't really do anything, sorry. Fine, so I negotiate it back down by splitting the $40 so now my car will be shipped for $795. When the driver comes to pick up the car, he shows my dad the invoice that Stephanie generated at $825. I had already given her a $200 deposit - good luck getting that back- and I owed the driver the remaining $625. The driver, btw, was really nice. A great guy just trying to earn a living, totally respect him. My guess is that this is pretty par for the course in this industry. It is dog eat dog, so I would suggest that you figure out what you are willing to pay, find the carrier that will do it at the price and wait until a driver gets desperate enough to pick it up. My bids ranged from $775 to more than $1200. Good luck, thank god I don't move very often... hope they give me the $50 the promised if I give them 5 stars!
