Our Subaru broke down about 100 miles outside of Barstow, on our way to Disneyland. The cost to fix it in Barstow would have been about $4000, since it needed a new engine. We decided to leave the car in Barstow and rent a car for the weekend, so as not to spoil the vacation for the kids.
We did a lot of research, trying to find the most cost effective and convenient way to get the car home to Utah. To rent a Uhaul trailer would have been $450 and we would have needed my wife's husband to drive a vehicle down to Barstow and tow it home. With the cost of the rental and gasoline in the tow vehicle, it most likely would have been $600-$700. Not to mention the stress that goes along with towing the car ourselves. To rent a Uhaul truck and trailer would have been almost $1000, and the gas probably would have been a couple hundred.
I always had the idea of using a transport company in the back of my head, but I assumed it would have been really expensive. I'm glad I decided to look into it after all. I did a Google search and found this website near the top. I read through some of the reviews and decided on Magic Carpet. I was pleasantly surprised when Kathy answered the phone. She was very nice and sympathetic to our situation. When she gave me the price, it was a no brainer. She called me back to confirm that they had found a truck and was always very easy to deal with.
The only minor complaint I have is that the car was originally supposed to be picked up on Saturday afternoon, but wasn't picked up until Tuesday. Since I wasn't in a hurry for the car, it wasn't that big of a deal. The car was delivered Wednesday morning. I don't feel it was Magic Carpet's fault. I know that they are at the mercy of the drivers.
I am really glad I decided to give Magic Carpet a call. Kathy was super friendly and took the worry out of our situation. The price was lower than any other option we found, and not having to deal with towing the car ourselves made the price that much sweeter.
