A really good experience

I was very pleased with my experience with Heartland. I got about 15 quotes and this was one of the lowest but not the lowest (I had about four lower, up to $75 less). I searched all of the companies on this website, BBB, and Angie's List and threw out anyone with low reviews. Heartland still wasn't the lowest, but just $50 higher than the lowest I was still considering. When I first told John he wasn't the lowest, after telling me how price isn't everything (who can blame him), he offered to post the job for $100 less and just see if a trucker picked up on the quote. After a couple of days no one had picked up on it and I had more quotes that were either equal or higher than John's, so I felt like the rate was fair.

I did all this right before I finished buying the car (I bought the car online and used a local inspector, so there were a few days to work the transport quotes before the car would be ready.

Anyway, when the car was ready, I told John I would go with him if he still had a quick pickup (two days earlier he had emailed to tell me he had a hauler at $850 but I had said I'm not ready yet). He emailed me back in a few minutes to say yes, he had a hauler who could pick it up the next day or the day after. Bottom line, that's exactly what happened - my car was picked up two days later. The hauler was polite and efficient and there were no surprises. They had estimated it would take seven days to deliver (huge winter storm in Boston and the seaboard and I'm all the way down in Texas), but I got a call first thing Monday morning (4 days later) saying the car is here. They delivered about three hours later - polite driver and his partner.

So all in all - this was an easy transaction, and John was polite and efficient. I don't know how he does this for $50 in profit per haul (and heck, maybe there's some commission the haulers pay back to him too, that would be fine with me), but frankly you can't make a living this way if you're not good at what you do - so I imagine my experience was not unique. I told John I'm going to leave him a good review on Angie's list because he's not listed there yet - so that's what I'm going to do next.
