Here are the facts of my recent experience with Best Car Shipping Inc., 312 W. 2nd St. A3006, Casper, WY 82601, 307-288-5972.
.
I am providing all the above contact info because I understand there are two car shippers with similar names.
(As a Florida snowbird for six months a year, I have been shipping cars, and motorcycles, between my homes for the last 20 years. Every single experience — until this one — was a pleasant one that adhered strictly to the terms of the underlying contract.)
On June 23. I entered into a written contract with Best to ship my car on August 16 for a total price of $755.
I was required to provide my Visa number for a $200 deposit that was required on signing.
The balance of $555 was due on delivery.
On the August 16 pickup day, Best informed me that the price would actually be $1975, and that pickup would be a day late on August 17.
Best also informed me that I would need to pay another $75 “Reservation Fee” on pickup, in addition to the $200 deposit already paid.
(I then checked my VISA bill and saw that Best actually charged my VISA $212 as a deposit, not the $200 in the contract and that I authorized.)
I had no wiggle room when I received this very troubling news — because I knew it would not be possible to arrange an alternative in the 16 hours remaining before pickup and I needed the car at its destination by August 22.
(Best stated in its message that regardless of the delay in pickup the August 22 delivery would not be a problem.)
The car arrived a day late on August 23. And not only was the delivery late, but despite my repeated calls and texts to Best that the driver should call me on approach, the driver called and texted the pickup location number instead.
Fortunately, someone at the pickup location number finally saw those calls and texts, and contacted me to tell me. Or perhaps the car never would have been delivered. When it did arrive it was covered with grease streaks and spotty deposits that looked like dried concrete.
Because I had no one who could be available at my out-of-town pickup location to meet the truck on pick-up after August 18, attempting to forfeit my deposit and face a claim by Best for whatever they believed the balance was that was due, and arrange for alternative transport, was not an option.
Best actually showed up another day late, August 18, to pick up the car.
Of course, I reached out to Best with my concerns by phone and email, at least receiving responses to each.
Unfortunately, the responses were, essentially:
-We’re not going to charge you $755 as promised under the contract;
-We’re not going to explain the $212 overcharge on the deposit;
-We’re not going to explain the new $75-due-on-pickup charge; and
-We’re not going to do anything whatsoever about the $1232 overcharge on the $755 contract price (other than to say Best’s costs have gone up).
Best also insinuated that some squishy language in the attached contract gave them full power to increase the contract price from $755 to $1987. Nothing in the contract permits Best to change the $755 price.
