My guy at 50 States, Nick, is a people person and responds quickly. We bought a new car out of state, sight unseen. It was a great deal, but we were a bit queasy about the process. We finally got that deal closed.

Then we had to ship it, a process that introduced a new set of uncertainties, and I’ll admit, anxieties, too. We searched the web for auto transport. We posted on UShip, which drew a bunch of high quotes. We filled out a handful of quote requests on the web from individual companies.

Nick, at 50 States responded and gave us a quote that roughly matched that which a friend had paid for a similar car shipment. So we accepted it.

I hammered poor Nick with a series of questions via email and phone, mostly about who is on the hook if the truck’s cargo burns up or something. He always got back to me fast. Since trucking is dominated by small companies (which I like) guys like Nick are brokers, not trucking companies themselves.

Brokers seem to have access to a master national marketplace where brokers and truckers do deals.

So the brokers don’t have direct control of the independent truckers they work with. Nick’s quote to me was a great price, but that means that it was not a mother-lode for the truckers.

Our job sat on the market for a couple of days. We had a little time, so that was OK. But not understanding this market at the time, that introduced some concern.

Then a trucking company accepted the deal, and we were told our car would be picked up Monday and delivered Tues. That sounded fast to us. And indeed it was. The car was picked up Tuesday and delivered Saturday.

Nick gave us contact info for the trucking company. When Wednesday slipped into Thursday, I had visions of our new car being dismantled at a chop shop or driven around Mexico by some gang. I called, and the trucker responded, so that was reassuring.

It showed up Saturday, in fine condition. It saved us the time and hassle of a trip to California.

We’d do it again. Nick’s good at what he does. He lives on thin margins and high volume, so he has to be efficient. My wife and I recommend Nick at 50 States Auto Relocation.
