I got lots of quotes from other companies for shipping my Honda CRV from Brooklyn to San Francisco over the July 4 weekend, all within the range of $1,300 to $1,600, but I went with 1-Flat Rate because of the helpfulness of Ray and his willingness to answer all my questions and explain to me how the business worked. I did not understand until speaking with him that all these companies are brokers who set you up with trucking companies and drivers who will pick up and transport your cars. The "deposit" that you give to most other companies either when you reserve with them or when the car is picked up is actually their broker fee - so most other companies have made their fee as so as you car is picked up, not when it is delivered - a concept I did not like, in case there is a problem with the delivery. 1-Flat Rate has you pay the full amount to the driver upon delivery, either in cash or cashier's check, and then collects their fee from the driver, so there is incentive to keep you informed and happy throughout the whole process. That said, it was a great process and the whole thing went much better than planned. On my first phone call, Ray called up on his computer from Central Dispatch all the cars that were being shipped from Brooklyn to California and were looking for drivers, and read me there prices they were offering to drivers. He said that if I was flexible on pick up and delivery days, I could do it for about $1,300, but that if I spent more my car would be very attractive to drivers and that it would be picked up and delivered closer to my ideal dates. That is exactly what happened. I agreed to $1,550 and said the first available date for pickup was July 1. Got a call on the afternoon of June 30 that the car would be picked up the next day, and it was at 8:00 a.m. We live on a busy Brooklyn street, so they sent a small truck that picked it up just around the block. I had been told the trip could take as long as 10 days, but the driver said it would be in San Francisco maybe as early as July 5, which is what happened. I was in touch with the driver all the way and met his large truck in a shopping center just a couple of miles from work and a short distance from home. No damage, and great experience altogether!
