On September 9, 2013 I researched auto transporters on the internet and the following day I received a call from Alan at 5 Star Auto Movers. To be honest, I HATE dealing with people that I find on the internet! I would much rather just call people, instead of them calling me, I feel I would have more control. Alan quoted me a price of $725.00 to move my car from Wappingers Falls, NY to Sebastian, FL. I had spoken to a few other businesses by the time I agreed to go with 5 Star. I wanted my car picked up on October 10th. I submitted my "deposit" of 125.00, with my Debit card on September 10th and THOUGHT all was well. I hadn't heard any more, except for an email receipt of my payment. Toward the end of September I called Alan again to make sure everything was still on schedule and was told to call him on October 8, if I didn't hear from anyone. In the mean time, I had heard from another company who told me my car listing was "way down" on the board, due to my low offer. (remember, I didn't set the price, Alan did!) Alan assured me that this was "just a trick" to get my business and he reassured me, AGAIN, that all was good and not to worry.
On October 9, I received a call from Eric telling me that there was a driver "in my area" who would pick up my car, in about 2 hours. I rushed to get my car ready, even though I wasn't given any prior notice, which I had been told I would receive. After about 5 or 6 hours, the driver finally called, and he wanted me to meet him at a truck stop on Route 84, about 10 miles from my house (after I had been told that it was a pick up and drop off door to door). I didn't know where this truck stop was, plus I didn't have anyway to get back. Since there was a language barrier, he contacted his dispatcher who in turn called me and we agreed on a much better location for me.
When I arrived at the agreed upon location, and finally located the truck after about 20 minutes (he wasn't in the correct location and didn't notify anyone) he looked the car over, which makes sense and gave me my papers with a total cost of $775.00. When I mentioned this to him, he just kept saying,"sure, it's fine" again due to the language barrier. The car was supposed to be delivered on Tuesday, 10/15, the day I was due to arrive in Florida. I received a call on Saturday 10/12 telling me that my car was in FL, ready for delivery. Since I was still in NY and my brother in FL was working, they told me it would be delivered on Wednesday the 16th. I looked the car over, all was good, and I paid the driver (including an extra amount for the driver). He counted the money and told me there wasn't enough. I tried to take back the money until it was resolved, but he wouldn't let me. He went back into his truck, to call his dispatcher and while doing this, I noticed he took out the "extra" money and put it aside, presumably so he could tell the dispatcher it was $50.00 short.
After much discussion with both the dispatcher at Sunshine Transport LLC and 5 Star the driver finally told me it was good, etc. It turns out that on 10/18 5 Star processed another debit on my card for $50.00! As soon as I saw it, I called 5 Star and they gave me a song & dance about them not making any money, it was a last minute reservation, etc. I told them that if they did, in fact, process the transaction I would have my attorney look into it and handle the case for me.
If they knew they couldn't get the job done for $725.00 they should not have offered that rate and I told them that. They should also have contacted me and I would have told them NO, I would go elsewhere!
As of Friday, October 18, they were going to "research it" and get back to me. I will call them everyday and if the money comes out of my account (and especially if other checks bounce!) I will have the bank intervene and try to get the money back and also have my attorney do what he must.
I WOULD NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH 5 STAR AUTO MOVERS AGAIN and will NOT refer anyone, even my worst enemy!
