This was the first time I have had to transport an auto but have had experience transporting horses, so the industry model is not new. I was trying to send a car (small SUV, apparently important and not good bait for carriers) from Atlanta to SF Bay area. I would say AmeriFreight bent over backwards for my drop off on Memorial Day to accomodate my schedule. However, after that, apparently no drivers bid for the job, and the car sat for two weeks in Georgia. I opted for the cheapest deal, eventhough Bob did alert me to the likelyhood of a quicker turnover if I went for the more delux, and more expensive, deal. My adivice is to take it, and use the more expensive option for your comparisons with other companies. I had no communication with the company and two weeks after drop off, thought I'd better call. (There is a storage fee for holding the car over 15 days). I was advised that no serious bids had come in, that I should sweeten the pie and go for the upgrade option, and I balked. Another communication with Graham confirmed that there was no action on the car, except an offer that would maybe materialize in 10-24 days for $500 more! AmeriFreight's west coast headquarters is in Anaheim is SoCal, and Bob and I had at the get go talked about the possibility of my picking the car up there instead of SF area, as I have relatives there, and I thought maybe with their presence there, it might be an easier transaction if I were to fly down, see my family, and drive back. He would take $100 off the price, but that didn't seem worth it at the time. After three weeks (and my kids coming home from college, thus the need for the car), it started to sound pretty good, and I suggested the possibility to Graham. Within 12 hours my car was being loaded, and showed up in Anaheim within 3 days. AND, the price was below or at least near the lowest price they ever quoted. A hastily arranged flight to Anaheim cost $200, and I had to drive back 400 miles, but I did have the car before it was time to consider a rental. Still, four weeks seems excessive. I would suggest a one stop company with drivers and brokers, but I think those are more expensive. Final thought- you get what you pay for.
