We shipped our vehicle from Edmonton to Ottawa...I was provided a quote (which I had to pay in advance) and an estimated delivery time of 9 - 11 days. We dropped the vehicle off on July 23, 2011 in Edmonton (at the address they provided). We went on vacation for two weeks and arrived in Ottawa on August 4, expecting our car to be here as it had been approximately 14 days since we dropped the car off (within their estimated deliver time). I called on the morning of August 5 to find out where the vehicle was and they told me that it hadn't even left Vancouver yet! My first question was, why on earth was it shipped to Vancouver...that's the wrong way!! I was told it would take an additonal 2 weeks to get to me from there. Two weeks go by...I call back and am told that Autorail doesn't know where my car is...it could be on a train on its way here, it could still be in a shipping yard...it could be stolen or missing...they didn't know, which was appalling! They didn't even offer any apology for this having happened...nor did they offer to keep us updated with what they were doing to try to locate the vehicle. They simply said that it was lost and 'would hopefully turn up eventually'...they said in a way to suggest that that was an acceptable answer...or I should say, "Oh yes...okay, fair enough...thanks for your time.".

Since we didn't have our vehicle, we were forced to rent one. We continued to contact Autorail for updates, seeing as how they rarely called called us (we got two phone calls from them throughout this entire ordeal). It was nearly impossible to get someone on the phone...the line would always go straight to voicemail and nobody would ever return our messages. We finally managed to speak to a woman who told us that our car was still missing and they didn't know where it was. Naturally, we were furious and her attitude was so blase and ambivalent...she simply said, "Well, what??! It's not MY fault! What do you want me to do??". A few minutes into the conversation, she hung up on me after I asked to speak to her manager...I called back immediately and got voicemail...where I left a message and nobody ever called back.

I eventually got into contact with Gerry, who I was told is the owner of the company. Our vehicle was eventually located and shipped from Vancouver. Though, instead of it being delivered to Ottawa, they shipped it to Halifax and this delayed me having my vehicles for another 2 weeks until they put it back on a train and sent it back where it belonged.

It was exceptionally frustrating trying to communicate with Gerry...if you get him on the phone, he simply says that he's busy and I need to call back later (I'm the customer...why on earth am I the one having to call you back??!). I sent him an e-mail saying that we expect to be compensated somehow for this mortifying experience...the vehicle we shipped was brand new and they told us for nearly a month that they had no idea where it was! VERY, VERY stressful...coupled with having to pay for a rental car (total of $2000) AND make my regular car payments! Gerry sent me an e-mail where he said that he was going to send 'a letter with compensation'. When I asked when this would come or how much he was going to send, he ignored those questions and would give me some ridiculous line about how 'he'd look into it'...after which, I would never hear from him. The last time I spoke to him, he asked me to call him later that evening as he was going to be working late and we would discuss this matter further. I called at exactly the time he asked me to and I got his voicemail. I texted him to ask why he wasn't answering his phone...he texted back to tell me there was a storm and their power had gone out. The fact that he texted me means his cell phone was working, yet he never called me back...that evening or any other day. I got tired of waiting, so I sent an e-mail in early October stating that he had until October 21 to compensate us, if he had any intention of doing so to begin with. We received nothing and he ignored that e-mail.

We got our car back at the end of September...nearly two and a half months after shipping it. It was filthy and covered in some sort of thick oily residue...I had to hand wash the car 3 times to get it all off.

This experience has proven that Autorail Forwarders is completely incapable when it comes to doing what they do...shipping vehicles. How Canada Post can track a single envelope anywhere in the country, yet a vehicle shipment company can lose a vehicle is beyond comprehension. The staff are rude (if they ever actually answer the phone) and the company's owner, Gerry has flat out LIED to me when he said he was going to compensate us for this horrible exprerience.

I'm going to be posting this story on every review site I can find in the sincere hope that it will prevent anyone else having to deal with this company and go through what we went through. It's shocking to think that a company can operate this way...had they admitted their error, given us the courtesy of an apology (which nobody there EVER did) and sought to remedy the situation by, at the very least, giving us our money back, that would have been a step in the right direction. Instead, they dodge phone calls, ignore e-mails and voicemails and the owner flat-out lies to his customers. I paid to have my vehicle shipped from Edmonton to Ottawa within 9 - 11 days. I DIDN'T pay for it to be shipped from Edmonton, to Vancouver, to Montreal, to Halifax...then back to Montreal eventually winding up in Ottawa two and a half months later!!

Anyone needing to ship a vehicle, please do yourselves a favor and go with a company that actually cares about quality service and cares about their customers. Once Autorail had our money, we were basically profiled out of existence...horrible customer service (not communicating with us or returning messages) and appalling customer relations ( the owner lying to the customer about compensating them.

JUST A NOTE,, WE MOVE OVER 2000 VEHICLES PER YEAR AND HAVE LESS THEN .05 % THAT HAVE COMPLAINTS, WE STRIVE TO DO OUR BEST... WE AREN'T PERFECT.. BUT WE TRY OUR HARDEST TO HAVE REPEAT CLIENTS. THATS IMPORTANT TO OUR BUSINESS MODEL. We as well want to point out that if you read these reviews, 100 % are from private individuals.. we have no negative reviews from any of our over 350 Corporate Clients IMPORTANT INFO TO OUR CLIENTS........ YOU SHOULD READ..... The Response to this Review may be found in greater detail at the bottom..... however, in the mean time, we provide the following..... HERE IS A GENERAL OVERVIEW Please be advised that Auto Rail has been in Business for over 25 yrs and ships over 1000 vehicles per year, we are in Partnership and Rely on our main Service Providers CN RAIL and ALLIED SYSTEMS who both have been in business for over 60 yrs. These service providers have been Delivering our Clients Vehicles to several Locations across Canada and the USA for many many years. It is important to Note that we do have Clients who complain from time to time..and we understand the frustration of waiting for delayed shipments. Auto Rail does it's very best to get back to clients as quickly as possible with answers to there questions. In the shipping business, Private clients need info, and we understand that... ... some clients want updates, some want in the AM, some want in the PM.. some want daily , some want weekly and others.. well they understand the delays and the time it can take. Auto Rail can only give approx times and can never guarantee an exact delivery time, as per the terms and conditions that we provide to each and every client. What clients don't understand is that the auto shipping industry in Canada is very small, compared to our neighbors in the USA. Service providers in Canada ship using Rail - Truck and in some cases a Drive Away Service. Take for example, Allied Systems our main service provider, who is the Largest Auto Shipping Company in North America. Recently Allied Systems ( which you can google) lost 2 major Contracts in 2011 that they held for over 50 yrs with GM and Chrysler Corporation, leaving almost 250 trucks now sitting idle in Canada . You ask, How has this effected the market Place and why is my shipment so late.? What private shippers don't understand is how that has effected the market place for used vehicles being moved throughout the entire Country. Basically, those smaller carriers owning from 1 to 10 trucks in Canada.. have gone after those two contracts across the county and have little or no time to move used vehicles, So the industry has taken a major turn on the used car shipping business in Canada. Why ? why is it , that Clients vehicles are being delayed and put on the back burner, as others scramble to find interline carriers to hopefully move there inventory for ie: moving companies, used car dealers Gov't , and Private shippers etc etc.. Shipping vehicle in a timely manner is and has been a major problem for awhile now. Why you ask ? Think about it..... Who would you rather move vehicles for.... GM - Chrysler or any of the big manufactures or one zzeess or two zzeess from private shippers. The answer is quite clear... truckers big and small would rather ship for manufactures, who give them little to no headaches and don't have to answer to clients shipping one vehicle at a time, versus 500. What must be understood is that it is not our intention to hold vehicles that are being shipped, we have never lost or have had a vehicle stolen. Vehicles for sure have been delayed with out question, SOME yes have been lost in our yard, as we sometimes have over 2000 vehicles in a yard waiting to be delivered.. But ...STOLEN.. .. NONE. What Clients don't understand is that from time to time we do have to rely on several other inter connect carriers who don't tell us the straight goods and give us false hopes of yes it was or wasn't picked up, or our truck broke down and couldn't pickup the vehicle. etc etc.... Lies Lies Lies.. and what we have to tell the client is what information is relayed to us..... Inter Line Carriers as well don't like to pay there claims when we have not physically handled the vehicle. Almost every time we take the blame and fingers are pointed at our Company , when in fact the carrier who we brokered to move the vehicle , takes there fees quoted and will not and doesn't take responsibility for damages or the time delays that they have caused. All the carrier cares about is getting paid for that shipment. Since our Head Office is Located in Halifax Nova Scotia , we do communicate with the local police dept on several matters, not only here but across the country. Police Agencies Ie: RCMP contact us on a regular bases to track vehicles that may be suspected in illegal drugs being shipped or other items, so we on a regular bases provide details to them for investigation. It is our goal since our volume of business has increased over the years to up date Review sites, like this one , so that we are on top of each and every review and we give feed back. We as well are going to start collecting and have clients submit reviews that are positive and those of which may have had a claim and that they have been satisfied. We are yes sometimes at fault for perhaps not calling or emailing a client back, in the time frame that they wish us too.. however we are here and we are moving hundreds of vehicles. Sincerely, Management AutoRail
