This was the first time I had to ship a car so I shopped around a lot. When I settled on Ship-a-Car Direct, I felt their initial quote was fair for shipping a small SUV across the country during winter ($1400). I felt the broker I worked with explained the process so I felt at ease with that. However, actually getting a truck proved to be a problem. I booked on 12/31 so I expected the holidays to be a bit hectic. Got notice that my car was going to be picked up on 1/5 only to get a notice 2 hours later that the order was cancelled. When I called to inquire, I was told there was a physical problem with the truck. Okay, that happens, but then they charged me the broker fee simply because they found me a hauler, not because my car got picked up. I ended up having to wait until the 12th. By this time, I had already moved to my new location. When the new hauler was assigned, I was given a call saying "he'll be there in an hour" (ok cutting it close, but we were able to get the car ready to move). This only seemed to happen after I called a day or two before to ask about the status and why I was charged a broker fee without a deal actually being brokered until the 12th. However, what I was not told was that my bid was only accepted because it was upped to $1450. I was not contacted to ask "hey can I up the bid?" I was just told on the 12th, "we have a hauler, he accepted a bid of $1450, and he can be there in an hour to pick up the car." This really put me in a tight bind so I felt as if I HAD to accept the offer. I think a lot better communication would have been nice and a little more heads up on the fee. Also, really wasn't told the charge was broker fee + shipping fee; left with the impression it was one lump sum that the broker fee is taken out of and the driver gets the rest. Now my hauler company US Freight Haulers Inc... wow! He picked up my car in Chicago on the 12th and I was told it would arrive in Oregon on the 15th. This is during January and a raging pandemic, so 2.5 days drive was impressive enough. Then I got the shock of my life when the driver called to tell me they arrived on the night of the 14th!! So this guy basically drove straight through Chicago--Oregon. Car was fine, no damage. Overall, 3-stars because my car eventually made it, fast, and in one piece. So job got done.
