Very Flexibile, Insist on Everything

J&S was willing to help me out when another transport vendor bailed on me and appeared to go out of business. There is a singular service where carriers are subcontracted out, so carriers cannot bid against each other on the same job. J&S was willing to work with me after I made specific requests to kill the other job, and were very helpful- I greatly appreciate their flexibility and their pricing was spot-on.

I only had two requests which I addressed early on and neither was honored. Firstly, I asked to be kept in regular contact and to be given updates as things happened. I appreciate that they are a busy business but I would often have to call in to get my own updates. I would be told "it will take 2 days to do xyz" and I would have to call in for an update by day 4. Because the original carrier had gone dark on me, I requested a regular update to address scheduling, transport timing, and delivery estimates. I would be given a four day window and told that "it will tighten closer to the delivery date." When I wouldn't hear anything, usually halfway through that delivery window, I would call in for an update and be told that they didn't have any news. The carrier itself always arrived late at night, and gave little notice for their pickup/delivery windows. When the vehicle was finally delivered, I never received a follow-up call or email to a) confirm delivery and b) ask about the condition of the vehicle.

Secondly, the vehicle I transported was a slow-slung convertible. I specifically asked J&S to inform their carrier that I did not want the vehicle sitting under a different one, or at the bottom of the trailer, since it would pick up a lot of junk in the undercarriage while en route. When the vehicle was delivered to me, it was covered in sand, dirt, and gravel, and the vehicle was right behind the truck's rear wheels! As a broker, J&S is not responsible for the placement of the vehicle in transit. Nevertheless, I was very disappointed that my request had not been relayed to the carrier.

J&S is a great brokerage to work with- their staff is very friendly, but they are not forthcoming in their communication. I'm very appreciative of their willingness to break industry standards and work with me (due to the failure of another brokerage) but, given the nature of working with subcontract carriers, their promptness and customer service could use improvement. I would highly recommend them, so long as you a) establish a communications cadence or b) do not desire to be kept in the "granular loop" as I did.
