Now I get how it works

When I first looked into having our car transported I just went on the web and picked a company to get a quote to see approximately how much it would be. Fortunately, before I went ahead I checked the Better Business Bureau site, where the business I had first contacted had terrible reviews. I searched the BBB site for an auto transport company and picked All Aboard because it has an A+ rating from BBB, has been in business for many years, and is based fairly near where I live.

What I now understand is that the auto transport companies are brokers rather than movers: they find a trucker who is making a trip to the area where you want your car to go. You pay some of the moving price to the broker up front, and the rest is paid to the trucker when the car is delivered. The way the broker finds the trucker is by putting out a price that you are willing to pay for the move (having first estimated what is likely to be accepted based on recent prices); if no one accepts, then you need to increase the price accordingly. Fletcher suggested a price that was slightly above the automated initial quote that I got when I submitted my request, but lower than other recent prices, and it was accepted within a day by a trucker who Fletcher said was reputable. The driver showed up on the promised day (although somewhat later in the day than the trucking company estimated), and the car was safely delivered on the day promised (also later in the day than the trucking company had estimated - I filled out the form to say "on time" since it was the correct day).

Fletcher at All Aboard was knowledgeable and very willing to answer my many questions. I would have been more comfortable if it were actually his company that was doing the transport, but that's not the way it works. I took some comfort from the fact that Fletcher has been in this business for many years and apparently knows what price is likely to be accepted and which truckers are reputable and which are not. If I were going to do this again I would again call All Aboard.
