| Avoid using a broker. What a nightmare! |
So I did what most first time movers would do, I went with the lowest quoted price. What a mistake! I leave for California in 3 days, my car was suppose to be on route by now according to A-AAA. Well, today I had to go with another carrier, and this time I hope they don't screw me over. But for now I'll tell you how my experience was with this company (A-AAA Auto Transport, LLC). At first, it's great they give me an awesome price and tell me that "they will call me when to schedule a pick-up date", one week before the day I was leaving, Monday (7/28/08), they call me and tell me and tell me that they are picking up my car ON THAT VERY SAME DAY! I asked for at least 2 days notice and gave them OVER a weeks notice (they generally ask for 3 to 7 business day window), but that didn't happen. But, I was happy that my car was going to be shipped and with the estimated shipping time of 7 to 10 days I am in great shape. That's the end of the good news. Someone calls me and tells me that the truck driver is not coming to pick up my car because it "wasn't worth it for him to pick up just one car" (I'm in NY, I'm sure there are more than one cars to ship in this state). He said he would had another transporter and that he would call me as soon as he contacts him. I was never called again. Tuesday, I called A-AAA the next day, Maria said that they were "working on a schedule for me and would call me the next day for an update." Wednesday, again nobody called me and this time I called an nobody answered. I left a message, and nobody returned my call. Thursday, I started looking elsewhere, but most of these companies ask for a week to schedule you in. Today is Friday (8/1/08), they still have not called me. I had to call them to cancel and go with another carrier. It's going to cost me another $150, but at least they gave me a pick-up date.
This is what I've learned, these brokers don't have ANY power to negotiate. If a trucker is charging $1000 then that's what it's going to cost. A broker will just wait and wait. They don't care about your agenda. If they can get it at that price great, if not, to bad for you. They won't even call you to tell you that they can't do it at that price. They'll just leave you waiting. Go with a company that has a good reputation and their own fleet of trucks. This way you know that they can move your car at the price they quote you. Also, give yourself as much time as possible don't go by what they say!
