First off, let me say that I am Canadian and therefore the issue of organizing transport for a vehicle from Canada was therefore even more difficult and confusing but in my case Sue Wheeler absolutely saved the day!
Here's my story...
I purchased a Fiat Spider convertible from just outside San Francisco which I needed to get to Canada. I had decided not to ship over the border and instead to travel over the border to meet the vehicle and drive it up. Because I live in the interior of BC I had wanted the vehicle shipped to Oroville Washington, a considerable ways off track from the I5 corridor truckers normally take to Seattle.
Initially, like most people, I went searching for the cheapest transport company... I found them... Giant Auto Transport. The guys answering the phones there sound like they're all 17. They assured me if I booked with them they would have a driver within two days and have the item up in Oroville 2 days later. Sounded good for the $625 quoted. I called back to double check something and the new fellow I spoke to (also sounded like 17) answered my question then slightly upped the quote to $650. Finally I called back to book early on Friday morning and was told $675. Regardless I said fine and we moved forward. I hadn't heard anything by Monday so I called back. I was told by Tuesday they'd have a driver - Called Tueday I was told by Wednesday. Called Wednesday I was told by Thursday. On Thursday when I called I was told Friday and that it would now take the driver 7 to 10 days to deliver.
In the meantime on Wednesday I had found this site, realized Giant had an awefull rating so I went up near the top of the list and called 1st Call Auto Haul. The fellow there, Eric I believe, was great. He explained some of the ins and outs including the fact that I would have a very hard time finding a trucker to deliver to Oroville so I was better to deliver to Seattle. He then told me he couldn't take my order until the next day as he was at that time at a Yankees game. The next day I called him and again he told me he couldn't take my order as he was at another Yankees game. He said he'd contact me later that day. No follow up call came and the next morning (Friday) I called several times and left messages but received no reply to them or my emails. Sooooooo....
Having by this time lost all faith in shipping my wife and I decided I would simply go to San Francisco and drive the vehicle back. Before I took that drastic measure I decided to call Wheeler Shipping in one last ditch effort to try auto shipping. Sue answered right away and despite the fact that she was away from her office, took the time to find another computer remotely, log in and help me. She must have been on the phone with me twenty minutes explaining all the ins and outs of auto shipping. It was fascinating and Sue was terrific. She obviously knows a HUGE amount and guided me through everything. She assured me I could get the vehicle shipped up by the following Friday or Saturday so I booked with her.
Moments after booking I received a complete email order confirmation with tracking info.
This was the Memorial Day weekend so I didn't bother Sue over the holidays. Promptly Tuesday she contacted me with a driver. I contacted the driver immediately. He told me he would pick up Thursday night or Friday am and have the vehicle arrive between 12:30 and 1pm on the Saturday.
Sue followed up all week with me to see that everything was going fine. The driver picked up around 7pm Thursday evening. He contacted me several times to update me on his progress. I traveled down to Seattle and spoke again with the driver Friday night, again he reiterated Saturday between 12:30 and 1. He contacted me several times Saturday morning to keep me updated including a half hour warning call before he arrived and low and behold he showed up at exactly 12:45... INCREDIBLE!
The vehicle was in great condition, Daniel the driver was amazingly friendly and helpful.
And to top it off, Sue called me again to follow up to make sure everything went fine.
Total cost? $800.
Bottom line, for $175 more than Giant quoted me (and I'm sure they would have cost me more by the time I was done with them had I stayed with Giant) I git my car delivered professionally, I got serviced by a truly knowledgeable, caring shipping expert and my vehicle arrived on time almost to the minute.
I will do this again and I will not use anyone but Sue! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't waste your time with these 'budget' carriers. Call Sue Wheeler, it won't cost you anymore and the headaches you'll save will be priceless.
